Smoke from wildfires in Canada covered New York City and other parts of the northeast with a thick yellow haze on Wednesday.

As New York faced its worst air quality since the 1960s, many likened the strange yellow appearance of the air pollution to Mars or a scene from an apocalyptic movie.

Across the northeast, flights were grounded and officials warned residents to stay inside.

"We recommend all New Yorkers limit outdoor activity to the greatest extent possible," said New York City Mayor Eric Adams, in a statement.
