Pennsylvania Trooper, Gunman Killed in Shootout After Attack Near Barracks
A second trooper was shot and seriously wounded by the same assailant hours earlier, officials said
A gunman and a Pennsylvania state trooper were killed in a shootout, hours after the shooter seriously wounded another trooper, according to authorities.
The bloodshed began around 12:45 p.m. Saturday when the shooter opened fire near a state police barracks in Mifflintown, about 50 miles northwest of the capital city of Harrisburg, officials said.
The shooter seriously wounded one trooper, who was rushed to an area hospital, authorities said.
When troopers found the gunman in nearby Walker Township around 3 p.m., a shootout ensued, according to officials.
Both the gunman and a trooper were struck and killed in that exchange of gunfire, authorities said.
Investigators did not immediately disclose the names of the slain trooper or the shooter, nor did they publicly identify a possible motive for the attacks.

The fatal shooting came just one day after a New York State Police trooper was shot while conducting a traffic stop, officials from that agency said.
Trooper Richard Albert pulled over a silver SUV around 11:10 a.m. Friday after seeing it going over 100 miles per hour along I-88 in Duanesburg, approximately 20 miles northwest of Albany, authorities said.
As Albert approached the SUV, its passenger, Nelson Troche, pointed a gun out of the front driver’s side window and opened fire, hitting Albert in the upper portion of his left arm, officials said.
The injured trooper returned fire as both the driver and Troche ran out of the SUV and fled on foot. The driver, whose name has not been released, was nabbed near the scene and taken into custody uninjured, police said.
Troche, a 32-year-old Schenectady resident, was found about 90 minutes later in Duanesburg with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities. He was rushed to an Albany hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Albert was also hospitalized for treatment of his injuries and has since been discharged.
