NYC Cop Indicted on 119 Counts of Child Porn Possession
Tip leads officials to find photos of child sexual abuse on officer's iCloud account, DA says
A New York City police officer was indicted on 119 counts of possessing child pornography on Thursday.
In a press release, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that NYPD Police Officer Steven Marksberry of Long Island was indicted for possession of child pornography, after allegedly taking screenshots and saving child sexual abuse material to his cellphone.
According to the DA, police received a tip from Internet Crimes Against Children, alerting the agency that Marksberry allegedly uploaded child sexual abuse pictures to his iCloud storage account.
A search of his phone and iCloud account allegedly found dozens of images showing girls between the ages of four and 12 being sexually abused.
“Not only is this defendant alleged to have saved a large quantity of child sexual abuse material to his phone, but he is alleged to have done so while he was a sworn police officer. No one is above the law,” said Tierney.
“The safety of our children is, and always will be, of the utmost priority for my office.”
Marksberry has been charged with 119 felonies including 50 counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child and 69 counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child.
If convicted, Marksberry faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. He is set to appear in court on July 10.
