A North Carolina man accused of hitting and killing a 6-year-old girl with his car showed a lack of remorse in the aftermath and calling the victim a “r-tard” who shouldn't have been playing in the road, officials said.

According to the Cary Police Department, 6-year-old Joselin Perez Hernandez was struck by a car in front of her home in Cary on Friday.

The girl died shortly after being taken to the hospital with brain and spine injuries.

Authorities identified the driver as Andrew Brady Everett. He was charged at the scene with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, felony involuntary manslaughter, failure to reduce speed, exceeding the posted speed limit and careless and reckless driving, according to the Wake County District Attorney’s office.

A police report obtained Tuesday by WRAL found that Everett displayed a "lack of remorse" at the time of the crash. When speaking to police, he allegedly complained that the investigation was taking too long and claimed no one was watching the girl when she jumped in front of his car.

Witnesses and others who saw the crash occur disputed those claims, and the police investigation found a lack of skid marks on the road, suggesting the car did not brake before hitting the girl.

Police also found drug paraphernalia in Everett's car, WRAL reported.

In a statement, Cary’s Mayor Harold Weinbrecht offered his condolences to the Hernandez family.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the grieving family facing the untimely death of their child. Our community stands united in support, offering strength and compassion to all those affected by this profound loss,” Weinbrecht said.

Everett is being held in the Wake County jail under a $26,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for January 22.
