A newly released video shows the moment when a Wisconsin man stole a police vehicle while the officer was conducting a traffic stop.

Milwaukee police officers were making a traffic stop in December 2022 when the door to their vehicle could be heard slamming on dash cam video. The cruiser then pulls away from the curb, right past an officer.

Moments after the suspect seemingly makes off with the cruiser, laughter can be heard on the dash cam. Seconds later, the officers left behind are heard calling for backup over the radio.

"Looks like somebody just stole my vehicle," an officer is heard saying. The dispatcher replies, "OK, did you say your vehicle?" To which the officer responds, "Affirmative. Vehicle 106."

The suspect in the cruiser continues driving, running a stop sign, passing cars on the street, and speeding over a speed bump. The joy ride comes to an end after about a minute, and the man pulls over, gets out of the vehicle, and runs away.

Newly released body cam footage that lines up with the events shows an officer pulling out his gun in an alley near where the suspect ran off. The officer is seen approaching a trash can, and a man pops out seconds later.

As reported by WISN, the man was later identified as Daniel Barton.

Months later, Barton was accused of stealing another police cruiser in May of this year. In a similar situation, an officer had been conducting a traffic stop in Shorewood when Barton allegedly drove off with the officer's vehicle. He was arrested 10 minutes later.

Barton is facing misdemeanor charges for both cases and has been ruled competent to stand trial for both instances.
