Portions of New York Hit With Severe Flash Flooding as State Hammered With Thunderstorms
At least one person was killed due to the weather
Heavy rainfall in southern New York Sunday evening led to significant flooding in the areas of Highland Falls and West Point.
At least one person was killed due to the weather, the New York Times reported.
The National Weather Service’s New York office issued flash flood emergency alerts through 8 p.m. EDT for multiple areas of the state that lie along the Hudson River, including Peekskill, Stony Point and Haverstraw.
In addition, flash flood warnings are in effect for New City, Spring Valley and Monsey until 9:15 p.m. EDT, according to NWS New York.
The severe weather resulted in hundreds of flights canceled or delayed in New York, and also in Philadelphia, D.C. and New Jersey.

Social media users posted dozens of videos of floodwater levels in Highland Falls and West Point that reportedly reached at least 3 feet.
Around 12:44 a.m., the City of Canandaigua Fire Department tweeted it was helping with dozens of water rescues.
"Over 150 water-related calls, including dozens of water rescues. Currently, state fire, Monroe County water rescue, Ontario County water rescue and several other agencies are assisting," read the tweet.
Nearly 10 inches of rain have fallen in the Hudson River valley throughout Sunday.
Dramatic video taken by one Twitter user showed what appeared to be an enormous portion of New York State Route 218 washed away by the heavy, fast-moving waters.
The slow-moving storms have soaked a large portion of the Hudson Valley, among other regions of the tri-state, resulting in a number of homes flooded, mudslides and portions of major roadways closed, according to one local report.
"TRAFFIC ALERT: Rockland County- Palisades Interstate Parkway: Numerous roadways consisting of State Route 9W and Palisades Interstate Parkway are experiencing heavy flooding and washouts. The Palisades NB is closed from exit 14 to Long Mountain Traffic circle. Avoid The Area!!!" New York State Police warned via Twitter.
A flash flood emergency is rarely issued in the state, NBC 4 New York noted.
