Weather disruptions were not expected in many U.S. states this New Year’s Eve, but some regions could see at least light snow or mixed precipitation for the start of 2024.

The National Weather said an incoming clipper system from Canada is expected to “bring a light wintry mix to parts of the Ohio Valley, Central Appalachians, and Mid-Atlantic.”

Those regions will experience a cold front and precipitation Sunday into Monday.

“Just enough cold air will be in place for this weak system to produce a light wintry mix, and some accumulating snowfall is expected across mainly the higher terrain of the Central Appalachians where a few inches of snow is expected,” NWS said.

Winter weather advisories had been issued earlier in the day for states including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

The clipper system can be seen on NWS radar as of around 7:30 p.m. EST on New Year's Eve.

Much of the rest of the country will remain dry, with above-normal temperatures, through the holiday.

“Over the next couple of days, temperatures will be as much as 10 to 20 degrees above average for portions of the Intermountain West, Northern Plains, Upper Midwest, and the Great Lakes,” NWS said.

NWS predicts two separate storm systems will begin to affect the U.S. later Tuesday.

A Pacific cold front will “bring in a new surge of moisture” and locally heavy rain across California, NWS said. And across parts of the South, in the western Gulf Coast region and Lower Mississippi Valley, local heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected.
