New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Friday called for Sen. Bob Menendez's "immediate resignation" after his indictment for corruption charges.

“The alleged facts are so serious that they compromise the ability of Senator Menendez to effectively represent the people of our state. Therefore, I am calling for his immediate resignation," Murphy, also a Democrat, said about the New Jersey senator.

“The allegations in the indictment against Senator Menendez and four other defendants are deeply disturbing. These are serious charges that implicate national security and the integrity of our criminal justice system,” said Murphy.

The governor also pointed out Menendez has not yet been found guilty of said accusations and will have the opportunity to present evidence disputing the charges, saying "we must respect the process."

Menendez was charged Friday in a federal corruption scheme, accused of having secretly provided Egyptian businessmen with sensitive government information, in exchange for cash and gold.
