The 63-year-old security officer who was shot to death while working at New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord on Friday was a former police chief and also served in the Army.

Officials on Friday evening identified New Hampshire Department of Safety Security Officer Bradley Haas as the victim in the fatal shooting.

Haas was working at the hospital’s front lobby entrance when he was shot and killed around 3:30 p.m. Friday, a statement from the New Hampshire attorney general’s office said, according to the Boston Herald.

While life-saving measures were performed on Haas at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries, officials said.

Police shot and killed the shooter, whom they have not yet named, authorities announced at a press conference. No one else was injured.

“A state trooper assigned to the hospital and in close proximity immediately engaged, shot and killed the suspect,” Col. Mark Hall said. “The entire incident was contained within the lobby of the hospital.”

Haas previously served as chief of the Franklin Police Department, where he had worked for 28 years, WMUR News reported. Officials also said that prior to his time there, he served for three years as a military police officer with the U.S. Army.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu released a statement on Friday night, extending his condolences at the news of Haas’s passing.

“Valerie and I extend our sincere condolences to the family of Department of Safety Security Officer Bradley Haas of Franklin, NH, who gave his life today protecting the patients & staff at New Hampshire Hospital. He will be remembered for his heroism and decades of public service,” Sununu said.

Authorities expect to provide an update on the incident during a Saturday press conference.
