American Foods Group, LLC, is recalling around 58,281 pounds of Green Bay Dressed Beef raw ground beef, the USDA announced on Friday.

Public health officials say the product may be contaminated with Escherichia coli (E. coli).

The USDA says there have been no reports of reactions as of Friday, and the FSIS learned about the contamination after a sample was tested and came back positive.

People who ingest E. coli may become sick between two and eight days after consumption. Symptoms include diarrhea (oftentimes bloody) and vomiting, the USDA warns, and some infections can be more severe than others.

"Most people recover within a week, but, rarely, some develop a more severe infection," the USDA wrote, with some people — most commonly people under the age of five, older adults and people with weakened immune systems — developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

Because of the health risks, the USDA advises anyone who purchased the beef product to return it or throw it away.

The beef was produced on August 14 and the packages were distributed in Georgia, Michigan and Ohio, according to the USDA. (A complete retail distribution list was not yet available at the time of reporting.)

Affected packages have an EST. 18076 marking, and are labeled as "90050 BEEF FINE GROUND 81/19," "20473 BEEF HALAL FINE GROUND 73/27" or "20105 BEEF FINE GROUND 73/27."

American Foods Group didn't immediately respond to The Messenger's request for comment.
