Miami is famed for its beautiful beaches, sunny weather and vibrant nightlife but residents are now facing a new downside: the Florida metropolis is quickly becoming one of the most congested cities in the world – even worse than the notoriously congested Los Angeles.

A recent study by INRIX revealed that in 2022, Miami had the eighth-worst traffic in the world, with residents losing 105 hours a year to congestion. This was a marked shift from its 2021 ranking of 32nd in the world and a 59% increase in overall traffic.

Over the past several decades, Miami-Dade County has generally seen a continual growth in population. Between 2020 and 2022, however, the county actually shrank by .8 %, according to Axios. The slight decrease did not seem to improve traffic, with Miami seeing a 30% increase in traffic since before the pandemic.

American cities dominated the INRIX rankings, with four of the 10 worst cities being located in the United States. Though Los Angeles is famous for its terrible traffic, the California city did not make the list. Chicago, Boston and New York came in second, fourth and fifth place respectively – with Boston seeing a 72% increase from 2021 to 2022.

Outside of the United States, London residents are dealing with the worst congestion in the world. Residents of the British capital lose 156 hours to traffic annually. The other cities in the top ten are Paris (3), Bogota (6), Toronto (7), Palermo (9) and Monterrey (10.)
