A popular tourist destination in Mexico has seen an uptick in shark sightings, and authorities are warning beachgoers to beware when they enter the water.

Toro sharks have become a common sight in Playa del Carmen, with some of the animals washing ashore.

The sharks migrate to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico in the Caribbean Sea between November and February because the water temperatures are ideal for these marine animals to give birth, according to the Cancun Sun.

Though there are more sharks this time of year, Playa del Carmen's Secretary of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change and Zofemat (SECCZ) says this species is rather docile.

This species of bull sharks typically doesn't attack humans unless provoked. They typically feast in tropical waters on a wide range of marine species, including fish, rays, sea turtles and sometimes dolphins.

However, the SECCZ recommends to all beachgoers stay alert regarding shark sightings, whether those notices come from local authorities or on social media.

Should someone see a shark, they suggest they get out of the water and immediately notify a lifeguard. They advise people to follow instructions of lifeguards and police.

They also recommend not disturbing sharks as they’re in their natural habitat and do not feed them.
