In a backward series of events, three men were arrested after being freed from a shuttered jail by police Thursday night.

The three St. Louis, Missouri men were reportedly trespassing in an abandoned jail when they accidentally became stuck inside one of the cells.

St. Louis police spokesperson Sgt. Charles Wall told local news outlet KSDK that officers responded to the medium security institution, commonly known as the "Workhouse."

St. Louis police helped free the men and promptly arrested them, per the outlet. Wall said the men face possible burglary, property damage, and theft-related charges.

The jail has been unoccupied and unused for over a year. The last inmates were moved out of the facility in May 2022, nearly a year after the city’s mayor, Tishaura Jones, announced its closure due to allegations of inhumane conditions.
