Watch: Massive Lightning Strike Sparks Monster Gas-Fueled Fireball at Power Plant
No one was injured in the explosion, authorities said
A United Kingdom renewable energy power plant’s biogas tanks exploded after a digester tank was struck by lightning – igniting a large fire seen from miles away.
Severn Trent Green confirmed a digester tank had been struck by lightning just after 7 p.m. at the company’s Cassington facility north of Oxford.
The lightning strike caused an explosion and witnesses reported seeing a fireball light up the night sky,
According to the power company, no one was injured in the explosion, though the BBC reported a large emergency service response to the scene, including six fire engines, 40 firefighters, and at least four ambulances.
"Thankfully no one has been hurt, and we are working with the emergency services to make sure the site is safe so that we can assess the damage as soon as possible," a spokesperson for Severn Trent Green Power said in a statement.

The power plant processes solid and liquid food waste and transforms it into electricity and bio-fertilizer. According to the Oxfordshire County Council, the fire crews on the scene used an aerial appliance to fight the fire, the BBC reported.
"I was sitting in my kitchen when the whole room lit up with a brilliant white light, then followed by a huge crack which sounded like really heavy thunder,” witness Jack Frowde told the news agency. “I looked out of the kitchen window, and it was as if the sky was pulsating orange.”
People in the area were asked to stay home and keep doors and windows shut, police told the BBC.
