Mary Kay Letourneau "would have been thrilled" to have a grandchild on the way — and would probably be in a frenzy of buying clothes and supplies for the new baby, a friend tells The Messenger.

Letournau's youngest daughter, 24-year-old Georgia Fualaau, announced her pregnancy on her private Instagram account. Her older sister, Audrey Fualaau, 26, also posted photos on Instagram of her sister’s baby shower.

This means Vili Fualaau — who fathered both girls after Letourneau began sexually abusing him at age 12 — is set to be a grandfather by 40.

The friend tells The Messenger that Letourneau — who died of stage 4 cancer in 2020 at age 58 — was always haunted by her past decisions.

"She had a lifetime full of regrets," the friend says about the former teacher. "So a new grandbaby would have been a fresh start for her. She would have gone shopping for everything that baby needed."

Letourneau was a married sixth-grade teacher in 1996 when she began sexually abusing Fualaau, who was her student.

She twice became pregnant by Fualaau before he was 15.

She spent 7 years in prison for child rape. By the time she was released, Fualaau was an adult. He petitioned the court to allow them to see each other. The couple married in 2005.

But there were problems in the marriage. Letourneau complained to friends that Fualaau was immature; he said that she stifled him.

Letourneau also had a fractured relationship with her ex-husband, whom she had left for Fulaau. She first became a grandmother in 2011, when her oldest son from her first marriage became a father for the first time.

"She tried the best she could to be a good wife and mom to all her kids," the friend says. "She made a lot of mistakes, but she tried to make amends at the end."

Letourneau's marriage with Fualaau lasted until 2017, when he filed for formal separation. Letourneau’s friend and former attorney David Gehrke confirmed the news at the time, saying that there was no third party involved in the split, but that the couple had simply grown apart.

But Letourneau and Fualaau's daughters seem ready to focus on providing a stable family situation for the new baby, who is due in January.

"Words cannot explain how excited I am for my little sister to have this baby boy,” Audrey wrote on her Instagram. “[Georgia] you’re going to be such an amazing mom!"
