Woman Convicted of Killing Chicago Bears Star’s Pregnant Girlfriend Gets New Review of Evidence

A judge has agreed to review evidence that was used to convict Marni Yang for the murder of the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bears safety Shaun Gayle more than 10 years ago.

Marni Yang was found guilty in 2011 of the 2007 fatal shooting of Rhoni Reuter. Prosecutors argued that Yang and Gayle were romantically involved and she was jealous of Reuter.

A recording of Yang confessing to the murder to a friend was played in court and she was given a mandatory life sentence.

However, Yang and her legal team argue that her confession was coerced and that Yang was trying to protect her children. They also claim that forensic evidence, including fingerprints, will prove she could not have committed the murder.

ABC 7 Chicago reports that Judge Christopher Stride agreed to allow a rehearing and set another hearing in late January where he will decide whether the court will reconsider the forensic evidence and Yang's confession.

Yang's attorney, Jed Stone, said that he is 'convinced of her innocence' and says 'science proves she could not have committed this crime and the evidence points to another suspect.'

Prosecutor Jason Humke believes the evidence against Yang remains overwhelming and that there is no reason for a new trial.
