One man is dead after police responding to a yard fire in Texas found the man burning alive.

The Houston Police Department was alerted to the fire before 4 p.m. Sunday. HPD said that neighbors had called officials saying that the front yard of a home was on fire and that a naked man was lying on the lawn.

First responders pronounced the man dead at the scene once they arrived, as reported by KTRK-TV. The man’s identity has not yet been confirmed by police.

Houston Police wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sunday that the death is being investigated, “Westside officers are at 10800 St. Mary’s (Lane) at a suspicious death. Homicide Detectives are headed to the scene.”

Community members said that they were shocked to hear about something like this happening in their quiet neighborhood. “I’ve been here 18 years and we’ve never had any type of problems here. When I heard about it, I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’” Cesar Rincon, who also lives on St. Mary’s Lane, told KPRC-TV.

The cause of the fire and death are currently under investigation. According to KTRK-TV, witnesses who say they knew the man allegedly told police that he suffered from mental illness, but officials have yet to confirm if this was true.
