Employees of London’s subway service are set to go on strike Friday for seven days, which will cause a “severe disruption” in service, according to the agency that oversees the city’s transportation system.

Members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers who work throughout the London Underground are set to strike for a week starting on Jan. 5 amid a dispute with London’s government and Transport for London, the city’s transportation agency, over a 5% pay offer.

The strike is expected to result in a “severe disruption” of service between Jan. 8 and Jan. 11, with little or no subway service running after 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to a report by the London Evening Standard.

Other London transportation services are not expected to be affected by the strike. Talks between TfL and the union are ongoing.

“Our members have made it clear that they are prepared to take action, and we urge TfL to improve their offer to avert disruption in the capital,” said RMT general secretary Mick Lynch, the Evening Standard reported.

The London Underground supports nearly 25 million journeys every week, according to TfL data from November 2023.
