Harrowing Dashcam Video Shows Moment Georgia Officer Shoots and Kills Recently Exonerated Florida Man During Traffic Stop
The footage released by police shows a physical struggle between Leonard Cure and the deputy
Police in Georgia released video footage showing the series of events leading up to the fatal shooting of Leonard Cure during a traffic stop in Georgia, three years after Cure had been exonerated after spending 16 years in prison following a wrongful conviction.
Camden County Sheriff's Office released dashcam and bodycam footage "in an effort to be completely transparent as to what happened, and how the incident escalated to the point of extreme Use of Force."
Cure is shown being pulled over on Interstate 95 in South Georgia on Monday morning, with Deputy Buck Aldridge saying: "You passed me going 100 miles per hour."
“I’m not going to jail,” Cure says, with Aldridge replying that he will be going to jail because traffic violations in Georgia are criminal offenses.
As the two begin arguing, Aldridge tells Cure to put his hands behind his back before tasing him. The Taser failed to restrain Cure, who then walks toward the deputy and engages him in a physical struggle.
It's not immediately clear when Alridge's gun fires, as the audio of the gunshot can't be heard in the dashcam footage. But once Cure is shot, he falls to the ground and the deputy can be heard saying "shots fired" into his radio."

Aldridge then administers aid to Cure until backup arrives and paramedics take over. Cure later died from his injuries.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has said it "will conduct an independent investigation of the incident and turn its findings over to the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review."
The Camden County Sheriff's Office confirmed to ABC News that Deputy Buck Aldridge has been placed on administrative leave following the incident on Monday, as is typical protocol in police shootings.
Cure was convicted of robbing a Walgreens in Dania Beach, Florida, in 2003, according to IPF. He was finally exonerated in December 2020 after a county investigation revealed problems with the witness identification process and evidence handling.
