A police officer in Kentucky opened fire on his own police vehicle after a woman stole it with a suspect in the back seat.

The Greensburg Police Department says the incident took place around 7:15 p.m. Sunday when an officer was attempting to serve an arrest warrant on a man on Creason Lane in Greensburg.

Police said the officer located the man and was involved in a “minor altercation” with him while attempting to take him into custody.

The officer was able to put cuffs on him and put him into the back of his police cruiser. While the officer was still dealing with the man in the back seat, they say a woman jumped behind the wheel.

According to a news release, the woman accelerated toward the officer.  He opened fire into the vehicle.

She was able to escape the scene in the police cruiser with the man still in the back of the cruiser.

The empty police cruiser was later found on Marshall Ridge Road in Greensburg.

The man and woman were eventually located just before 3:30 a.m. Monday and taken into custody. WVLC Radio identified them as Jason Marta, 35, of Greensburg and Alisha Posey, 30, of Greensburg

The Kentucky State Police will be conducting the officer-involved shooting investigation.
