A 96-year-old man from Kentucky was arrested after he allegedly tried to smother his wife to "end her suffering," police said, according to local station WKYT.

Berea police responded to potential domestic violence on Friday, the station reported. Seymour and Elaine Taffler told officials that her father allegedly "snapped," and she found Seymour attempting to smother his wife, Elaine.

Seymour allegedly planned to kill himself afterward, police told the station. His wife, Elaine, suffers from dementia that is getting progressively worse, per the station.

Two caregivers at the home said the alleged attack lasted 15 to 20 minutes.

Seymour allegedly told police that Elaine said she was ready to die several times, the station reported. Neighbors told the station that they did not believe Seymour had ill intentions.

Seymour was arrested and taken to the Madison County Detention Center. He was released on Tuesday after posting bond.

Elaine was taken to the hospital. Her condition is unknown.
