An Israeli pilot was killed in a helicopter crash Thursday in New Jersey, according to reports.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed the pilot's nationality to YNETNews.com and said efforts are underway to return the body to Israel.

The pilot was not identified.

The helicopter, which witnesses said appeared out of control, crashed Thursday afternoon in South Brunswick and then fell into the Delaware and Raritan Canal, CBS New York reported.

“The tail was sticking out of the water, but the cab was underwater, and they were able to rock it backward and lift it up a little bit to gain access to the pilot. They were able to disentangle him and free him and bring him up onto shore, and unfortunately, his injuries were so severe that he did not survive the crash,” South Brunswick Police Lt. Gene Rickle told the station.

Police said there were no other victims.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
