Inside Vili Fualaau’s Complicated Relationship With Mary Kay Letourneau As He’s Set to Become a Grandfather at 40 (Exclusive)

'He was a very, very young dad. And he made a lot of mistakes that young dads make,' a friend of Letourneau tells The Messenger

Vili Fualaau first became a father at age 14 when daughter Audrey was born. Just 14 months later, he became a dad for the second time with the birth of Georgia.

It was the mid-1990s, and Fualaau was caught up in a whirlwind of controversy: the girls' mother, Mary Kay Letourneau, was a 30-something teacher who had begun sexually abusing Fualaau when he was a 12-year-old sixth grader.

"He was a very, very young dad," says a longtime friend of Letourneau's. "And he made a lot of mistakes that young dads make."

Now 40, Fualaau is set to become a grandfather after Georgia announced her pregnancy on her private Instagram. Big sister Audrey posted adoring photos of the baby shower.

Fualaau was not mentioned in any of the joyful social media pics.

Letourneau's friend says that despite the complicated relationship Fualaau has had with his daughters, he expects Fualaau to be a doting grandpa.

He'll have some recent practice because he's got a new little one of his own — an infant daughter from a new relationship. Baby Sophia was born in November.

"He's a grown man now, and he has learned a lot," the friend says. "I think he'll be just fine."

The friend adds: "He was a teen dad, and he has always had to be responsible since he was a young teenager. His immaturity showed at times, and it led to some strain between him and the girls."

By the time Georgia was born, Letourneau was serving a 7-year sentence for child rape and was ordered not to contact Fualaau. His mother was granted temporary custody of Audrey and Georgia.

When Letourneau was released, Fualaau was an adult. He petitioned the court to allow them to see each other. The couple married in 2005.

Letourneau's marriage with Fualaau lasted until 2017, when he filed for formal separation. Letourneau’s friend and former attorney David Gehrke confirmed the news at the time, saying that there was no third party involved in the split, but that the couple had simply grown apart.

Letourneau died in 2020 of Stage 4 cancer.

Fualaau has struggled to find his footing since his marriage to Letourneau. He has worked as a DJ — even hosting a "hot for teacher" event at a local bar in Washington State. Letourneau showed up and signed autographs for the crowd.

Aside from his DJ gigs, Fualaau has worked for Home Depot, along with several other similar jobs.

Fualaau seems to realize that his relationship with Letourneau had problems from the start.

In a September 2020 appearance on "The Dr. Oz Show," he said that he would behave very differently if he ever found himself attracted to a minor.

"I'd probably go and seek some help," Fualaau said.

"I couldn't look at a 13-year-old and be attracted to that because it's just not in my brain. It's nothing that I'm attracted to. I mean, we all have our preferences, and that's just not something that I would go towards," he explained.

Letourneau's friend says that Fualaau and his daughters are moving forward with their relationship.

"They've had to move through all that," the friend says. "And at the end of the day, they're family."
