Inmate Claims He Was Sexually Assaulted by Inmates, Guard at SC Jail, Then Returned to Same Dorm Where It Happened Again
The inmate's attorney said the prison staff 'sent the victim back to the scene of the crime so he could be sexually assaulted again'
A 21-year-old inmate at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center says he was raped repeatedly by inmates and a guard.
According to the law firm representing the unnamed inmate, he was sexually assaulted at least twice by four people, including a guard. After the first time, he was placed in the same dorm by jail officials, per The State.
"One sexual assault is too many. One time is unacceptable. This young man was subjected to multiple assaults by multiple perpetrators, including an Alvin S. Glenn detention officer," said Bakari Sellers, an attorney at the Strom Law Firm.
"And after the first assault, jail staff returned this young man to the same dorm where the first assault occurred. They...sent the victim back to the scene of the crime so he could be sexually assaulted again."
It is believed the incidents took place on August 26 and September 3. The law firm has called for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division to investigate the South Carolina jail.
Sellers and fellow attorney Alexandra Benevento have brought eight lawsuits against Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and Richland County after Lason Butler died of dehydration while in custody at the jail in February 2022.
