Police in Washington State recently discovered that a supposed contractor, squatting in a family’s home, was actually an out-of-state fugitive, accused of raping a minor.

Officers from the Kent Police Department, located near Seattle, were recently called to a local home following reports of trespassing. Homeowners had hired a contractor for an “extensive home remodeling” project – only to find themselves locked out of their property.

“The contractor had changed the door locks and was refusing entry to the owners,” the police department shared on Facebook. “The owners had tried several times to access the property but were denied.”

Three officers, a sergeant and a field training officer responded to the property, where the contractor and his girlfriend were still residing. After repeatedly trying to contact the couple, police entered the home and detained the pair.

Upon running the male suspect’s fingerprints, police identified him as a man accused of raping a minor in Idaho. There was a $500,000 outstanding warrant at the time of his arrest, according to the Kent Police Department.

Both the contractor and his girlfriend were charged with Criminal Trespass, while the contractor was further charged with being a fugitive from justice. Police did not release their names but did say that the man was 42 years old and the woman was 35.

In addition to arresting the couple, police also seized a shotgun with no serial number and a work trailer with an allegedly stolen license plate.

“If you're having work done on your business or home, please take the extra time to vet your contractor,” the police department said. “If they seem fishy, they likely are.”

The male suspect was booked in the King County Jail and is expected to be extradited to Idaho. The female suspect was booked in the City of Kent Jail.
