A pregnant woman riding a city bus was one of the victims in Wednesday’s shootings in Massachusetts, authorities said in an update.

The unidentified woman was struck by a stray bullet and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. There, her baby was delivered but died, according to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office. It is unclear how far along the woman was. Her current condition is also unknown.

The shooting occurred in Holyoke around 12:30 p.m. when three men “involved in an altercation” began shooting, per authorities.

All three men sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospitals, where they are also in custody, according to the DA's office.

Hampden’s District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation, which is being assisted by the Massachusetts State Police and the Holyoke Police Department.

The City of Holyoke installed the ShotSpotter program in March. The detection system allows police to find and respond to gunfire, which has led to an alarming number of gun incidents in the last six months.

Since its implementation, the program has reported 113 incidents involving gunfire. Of that total, there were 72 reports of gunfire that happened near a playground, 27 close to a school, and all but three near a business.

ShotSpotter doesn’t generate 911 calls, but it has led police to recover 457 rounds, seven guns, 10 arrests and the identification of six suspects. The Holyoke Police Department held a press conference Wednesday to boast of the system's effectiveness, just a couple of hours before the shootings.

Holyoke is a suburb north of Springfield in western Massachusetts, about 90 miles west of Boston. It’s home to the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.
