Hezbollah claimed responsibility Monday for shelling northern Israel in an escalation of hostilities along a new, second front in the war that erupted in the south two days ago.

The Iran-backed militant group said it used guided missiles and mortars to attack two locations, according to a post on X by Roi Kais, Arab affairs correspondent for Israel's public broadcasting service Kan.

Hezbollah reportedly said the move was a response to Israeli strikes that killed at least four of its fighters.

"In response to the launches detected a short time ago from Lebanese territory towards Israeli territory, the IDF forces are now responding with artillery fire," it said on X.

Monday's initial Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon came after a group of armed militants crossed into Israel, sparking a deadly gun battle with Israeli soldiers.
