Hero Healthcare Worker Returning From Honeymoon Saves Plane Passenger Suffering From Midair Medical Emergency
'It was one of those situations that was almost like a movie,' said Zachary Lazev, a Virtua Marlton Hospital resident
A healthcare worker returning from his honeymoon in Rome helped a save a passenger on his flight who was suffering a near-fatal midair medical emergency.
Zachary Lazev and his wife were returning from their honeymoon in Italy on a United Airlines flight destined for New Jersey when a flight attendant asked if there were any healthcare providers on board.
"It was one of those situations that was almost like a movie. You don't anticipate anything like that ever happening," Lazev, an anesthesiology resident, told local station 6 ABC.
A woman on the plane was suffering from dangerously low blood pressure when Lazev went into action, along with two emergency nurses on the plane, per the news station.
"(We) get IV access on the plane, start running fluids. I started pushing medications to sustain her blood pressure," he said. "It's on a plane, so you have limited medical supplies."
Lazev explained that he recognized that the woman's condition was so serious, an emergency stop would be required, which led to the plane landing in Paris. Once there, she was taken by an awaiting ambulance to a hospital.

Lazev is a Virtua Marlton Hospital resident who studied at Drexel University. He credited the university, an internship at Einstein Hospital and a residency at St. Joseph's Health in Paterson for his medical knowledge, which helped him save the woman.
"We work in the operating rooms, a controlled environment," Lazev said. This certainly isn't, but I will say sometimes you can surprise yourself at what you're able to do."
