Hamas "opened the gates of hell" with its unprecedented Saturday rocket barrage on Israel, the Israeli military's liaison to Palestine reportedly said — vowing that Hamas will "pay the price" with Israel now at war.

Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian said that the surprise attack that left at least 22 Israelis dead would not go unpunished.

“Hamas opened the gates of hell on the Gaza Strip," said Ghassan, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, according to the Times of Israel. "Hamas made the decision and Hamas will bear the responsibility and pay the price."

Ghassan issued the ominous statement as Israeli police and defense forces were working side-by-side to manage multiple "war zones," according to Israeli Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the nation "at war" in a televised address that followed the surprise strikes.
