One person was arrested after shots were fired at an elementary school trunk-or-treat event near St. Louis on Sunday.

The event hosted by Tillmann Elementary School was held at North Kirkwood Middle School, KSDK reported. Police responded to a report of shots fired around 4:55 p.m., according to a Kirkwood Police Department Facebook post.

Initial investigation found an individual at the event causing a disturbance, police said. Other people at the event confronted the individual about his unwanted behavior. He allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots into the air, according to police.

The suspect was tackled by event attendees and later taken into custody. No one was injured in the incident.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and more details will be released at a later time.

Kirkwood School District emailed families about the incident.

"We know there are many questions and concerns about the events of this evening. Police are in the process of investigating," the district said.

The district added that it is coordinating support for Tillmann staff and families.

"Thank you to everyone who has reached out with concern and support," the email concluded.
