Nicholas Godejohn, Gypsy Rose Blanchard's ex-boyfriend who is serving a life sentence for the first-degree murder of her mother, referred to himself as “Mr. Smiley” in an email to the New York Post.

“I want people to know that I am not lost in the ether of all of what is going on with whom shall not be named, I am just being patient for my true time to speak," Godejohn said in the email to the Post.

He refused to use Blanchard's name and included six smiley faces in the exchange.

"A lot of these questions will be answered in a foreseeable interview at the right time, which is not now," he said.

The email's conclusion reads, "True sincerity, Nicholas (Mr. Smiley) Godejohn."

Godejohn has not said much since Blanchard's release from prison last month. Blanchard was serving a 10-year sentence for second-degree murder before being paroled. The two were convicted of killing Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, in 2015.

Gypsy Rose admitted to convincing Godejohn to stab her mother, who suffered from suspected Munchausen by proxy. Munchausen by proxy is a mental illness in which a parent or guardian pretends that their child has various physical ailments.

Gypsy Rose is now married to Ryan Anderson, a Louisiana teacher. The couple married in 2022, while Gypsy Rose was still in prison.

Public defenders recently filed an appeal for a new trial on behalf of Godejohn, KY3 reported.

“In his last trial, he argued that his mental state did not meet the requirements for first-degree murder. The jury should have only found him guilty of second-degree murder,” public defender Tyler Coyle told the station.
