A motorist trying to assist after a crash was fatally hit by another car in Missouri on Monday, according to a local report.

The crash occurred when the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox veered off the road, struck a rock embankment and overturned on Interstate 70 in Independence. A Ford F-150 collided with the vehicle as it overturned, police said in a Facebook post.

“Once that vehicle came to rest, another motorist happened to see the crash and stopped to check on the occupants of that vehicle,” Independence Public Information Officer Jack Taylor told FOX4. He was then struck.

The uninvolved motorist was pronounced dead at the scene, along with someone inside the Equinox.

The Equinox was reported stolen in Kansas City prior to the crash. Taylor said the vehicle had five teenagers inside. The surviving teenagers were taken to a local hospital.

The Independence Police Department is investigating the incident. Investigators are working with the Jackson County Family Court, the station reported.

I-70 eastbound was closed for a few hours following the collision.

Taylor warned that it can be dangerous to exit a vehicle on an interstate.

"Any time you’re out on foot on an interstate where speeds are that great, you just have to be really, really careful,” he said.
