A 12-year-old boy led Michigan police on an hourlong chase Saturday night after allegedly stealing a forklift and striking at least 10 parked cars, authorities said.

Police officers in Ann Arbor, Michigan, received a report around 6:45 p.m. of a juvenile attempting to steal a “construction vehicle.”

A preliminary investigation found that the boy allegedly took the forklift, a Construction Genie GTH-636 Telehandler, from a construction site at Forsythe Middle School.

Several officers pursued the boy at speeds between 15 and 20 mph for roughly a half hour before deputies with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office took over the chase. The deputies ultimately stopped the boy at 7:53 p.m. and took him into custody without incident or injury.

Video posted to social media by the police department shows the low-speed chase ventured through multiple neighborhoods.

“This was a very dangerous situation that could’ve easily ended with serious injuries,” the Ann Arbor Police Department said in a statement. “The incident remains an active and ongoing criminal investigation.”

The boy was taken to a local juvenile detention center and was not identified because of his age.
