In their second fentanyl-related arrest this week, Florida police detained a man found with a quantity of the lethal drug sufficient to kill approximately 140,000 individuals.

Officers from the Volusia County Sheriff's Department executed a warrant at a business in Holly Hill. There, they discovered trafficking amounts of heroin, meth, cocaine, and fentanyl.

The department arrested Frank J. Powers, 47, who they had been investigating for several months.

East Volusia Narcotics Task Force and Volusia Bureau of Investigation found:

  • 729.5 grams cocaine
  • 276 grams fentanyl
  • 103 grams heroin
  • 112 grams methamphetamine

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration says 2 milligrams of fentanyl is enough to kill one person, meaning the amount found at Powers business would be enough to kill 138,000.

Powers is facing multiple charges, including trafficking in heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, manufacturing cocaine, maintaining/renting a structure for drug trafficking, possession of a schedule III substance, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, and possession of narcotic paraphernalia.

The department also arrested another two wanted on drug charges in Deltona after finding one hiding in an attic in Daytona Beach. Detectives recovered a total of 358.6 grams of fentanyl in that case.

Elsewhere in the United States this week, investigators in San Francisco said they had recovered enough fentanyl to kill 25 million people over the past four months, while the U.S. Attorney General announced charges against companies accused of playing their part in the crisis.
