Boards from the stage that William Shakespeare performed on have reportedly been discovered this month under layers of flooring at England’s oldest theater during a major renovation.

The 600-year-old oak floorboards are believed to be on the only surviving stage from Shakespeare’s time, according to The Guardian.

St George's Guildhall in King's Lynn dates back to 1445.

The theatre claims Shakespeare acted at the venue in 1592 or 1593, according to the BBC.

An expert on historical buildings was brought in during the renovations.

"We wanted to open up an area just to check, just to see if there was an earlier floor surviving here,” Dr. Jonathan Clark said. “And lo and behold, we found this.”

Clark used tree-ring dating and a survey of how the building was assembled to determine the floor was original, according to the BBC.

The large oak boards are almost 12 inches thick, held together with pegs rather than nails, according to the Lynn News.
