A father was shot and his son killed during an apparent robbery at their family-owned North Philadelphia corner deli Wednesday.

Police responded to the store, Nuevo Amanecer, or New Dawn, at around 5 p.m., finding three gunshot victims.

Residents told Philadelphia station WPVI-TV they believe the 61-year-old father owned the store while his 34-year-old son worked as a cook there.

A third gunshot victim was in their mid-20s. It wasn't immediately clear whether that victim was at all involved in the shooting itself or simply a bystander.

All three were rushed to the hospital, where the son of the store owner was pronounced dead. He had been shot twice in the head and once in the chest, according to local outlet WTXF-TV.

"It's a big loss, it's a really big loss," Kensington resident Marisol Hidalgo told WPVI. "He always has a smile, his spirit is so inviting. He's very nice."

The father also was shot in the head and chest, and is currently fighting for his life. The unidentified third victim remains in critical condition after being shot in the head as well.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, WTXF reporter Steve Keeley wrote that investigators were unable to locate a gun inside the store and believe the shooter may have grabbed the owners' weapon.
