A man and woman were killed after a bolt of lightning struck them during a storm in Michoacan, along the Pacific coast of Mexico.

The victims were a tourist and a hammock seller, according to Spanish outlet MARCA. The woman reportedly died at the scene, while the man was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Beachgoers captured the moment on camera.

In the U.S. there are an average of 43 reported lightning fatalities each year, according to the National Weather Service. The odds of being struck in a lifetime are about one in 15,300. Just 10% of those struck are killed, although some 90% are left with some degree of disability.

During a sudden lightning storm, beachgoers should try to get at least 100 yards away from the shore, or if under immediate threat, they should stay as low to the ground as possible, per the CDC.
