Elderly Man Hospitalized After Being Attacked by Over 200 Africanized Killer Bees
The bee attack resulted in hundreds of stings and a broken hip for the 81-year-old victim
Last month, an 81-year-old Oklahoma man, Carlos Amos, faced an agonizing three-hour bee attack that resulted in over 200 stings and a broken hip. He's now in the recovery phase, KOCO-TV reports.
While mowing his lawn in rural Oklahoma, Amos found himself under assault from a swarm of over 200 highly aggressive Africanized killer bees.
Amos recounted to the station that the bees infiltrated his ears. He attempted to use tissues to obstruct them, but the bees proceeded to invade his nose. All in all, Amos suffered over 200 stings on his ears, nose, lips, and eye, according to his daughter, Heather Garvey, in a GoFundMe campaign she initiated.
A good Samaritan stumbled upon Amos during the attack, helped fight off the bees, and immediately dialed 911, as per the family's account.
Garvey further shared that, as well as undergoing hip surgery, Amos' medical team continues to locate and extract bee stingers from his body.
Exterminators eradicated a hive at Amos' home, which contained more than 7,000 Africanized killer bees. The Smithsonian Institution reports this aggressive species, introduced in Brazil in the 1950s, is known to pursue humans for up to a quarter-mile and has resulted in approximately 1,000 human fatalities.

Despite the ordeal, Amos maintains a positive outlook, though he has a lengthy recovery period ahead. "He will require therapy to get back on his feet," Garvey wrote.
The treating physician informed KOCO that she had never witnessed such severe bee stings. She warned that bee attacks can prove fatal if swelling from the stings obstructs the victim's airway.
The family's GoFundMe campaign has so far raised close to $7,000 towards Amos' recovery and physical therapy costs, with a target of $30,000.
