A Delta flight out of Milan, Italy landed safely at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Tuesday following "severe turbulence" which sent 11 on board to the hospital, The Messenger confirmed.

On board the Airbus A350-900 were 151 passengers and 14 crew members, including 10 flight attendants and four pilots. It is unclear how many of the injured were passengers and how many were crew members.

The worlds largest airline, Delta Air Lines, took off from Sydney's International airport with its Boeing 777 for its very first flight from Australia to the United States.

"Our priority is taking care of our customers and crew who sustained injuries," the airline said in a statement to The Messenger. "We are grateful for the first responders who met the aircraft to provide medical attention and who are transporting the injured to the hospital."

The severity of the injuries was not clear.

Atlanta station 11 Alive News reported that the turbulence occurred 40 miles northeast of the airport.

According to FAA data, as cited by the station, a total of 163 people have been hurt amid turbulence on flights since 2009.
