Humzah Mashkoor, 18, of Westminster — part of the Denver metro area —appeared in federal court Tuesday, the DOJ said in a news release.

Mashkoor was arrested Monday at the Denver International Airport, where he was attempting to fly overseas.

Mashkoor intended to travel to the United Arab Emirates, where he planned to stay before going to Afghanistan or Syria to serve as a fighter for ISIS, the DOJ alleged.

The FBI Denver Field Office is investigating the case.

Mashkoor's next court date was not clear.
