A historic yacht club in southern California was gutted by a large fire that quickly erased decades worth of memories from the marina.

A structure fire at the California Yacht Club was first reported to the Los Angeles County Fire Department at around 11:30 p.m. Monday night, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Multiple fire trucks were dispatched to the marina as large plumes of smoke were captured and filmed by news stations escaping from the two-story clubhouse.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital after suffering moderate injuries while battling the inferno, a fire department spokesperson told the newspaper.

By around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, the fire was contained. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the outlet reported.

The club has been in operation since 1922 and has occupied the Marina del Rey clubhouse since 1967, according to its website.

Steve Hathaway, former owner of the club, told KTLA his father helped build the structure in the 1960s.

“It’s been a home for so many people … we just are so heartbroken right now,” Hathaway said.
