California Considers Moving Famous Napa Valley Sign as People Keep Running Across Highway to Instagram It

Authorities may be forced to move a historic sign so witless Instagram users don't become roadkill.

San Francisco news outlet SFist is reporting that officials met Tuesday night to discuss the historic sign that greets visitors to Napa Valley. It's become a landmark for northbound, selfie-obsessed 'Grammers — and could wind up being moved down the road.

This sign has greeted travelers along the frenetic Highway 29 in Napa since 1949. Now it could be relocated to outside Yountville.

SFist reported that, in the age of the selfie, motorists have been stopping in the middle of the busy road just to take photos of the historic sign.

In some instances, pedestrians are sprinting across the road to pose near it. At times, they've apparently gone to return their cars, only to be nearly hit because they were too busy admiring their photo.

The sign is now situated outside Robert Mondavi Winery — but the trade group Napa Valley Vintners wants it removed and re-erected outside Markham Vineyards, north of Yountville.

The petitioners cite the existence of a nearby turnabout in their request.

The signage shifting would coincide with the construction of a Napa Valley Vine Trail, a 47-mile, walking and biking trail system "connecting the entire Napa Valley — from Vallejo to Calistoga."
