Arrest Made Weeks After California Girl Raped in Own Home for Hours by Intruder Who Snuck in Through Unlocked Door

A California man was arrested Thursday as a suspect in connection with an hours-long rape of a 12-year-old in her home while her parents were sleeping, police said.

The suspect had allegedly entered the home through an open door and told her there was a gunman outside who’d kill her if she screamed.

Marcos Maldonado, 35, was arrested by police while he was on a bus headed from Los Angeles to Bakersfield, Culver City Police Chief Jason Sims said at a news conference Friday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department jail records show that Maldonado was booked on suspicion of sexual assault and being held on $1.2 million bail, according to KABC.

"From the day that this crime occurred, Culver City Police Department detectives have worked diligently to locate the involved suspect in this case," said Sims, who added that DNA evidence helped identify Maldonado as the suspect.

Police were called to a neighborhood in Culver City — about 10 miles west of Los Angeles on the morning of Dec. 2 on a report of rape.

The young girl said a man entered her bedroom sometime between 2 and 3 a.m. and repeatedly raped her until he left around 7 a.m. After the alleged rapist left the home, the girl woke her parents and told them to call the cops.

Investigators believe the suspect entered the home through an upstairs window on the balcony that was unlocked. The girl told investigators that the man told her a man was standing on the balcony with a gun and would kill her if she didn’t remain quiet.
