Police in Northern California are investigating a suspicious death after a suitcase containing a body was found floating in a lake Tuesday morning.

The remains were stuffed into a piece of luggage and tossed into Lake Merritt, KNTV reported, citing law enforcement.

It's unclear how long the body was in the suitcase or in the water.

Volunteers cleaning up the lake made the gruesome discovery, according to the outlet.

"Normally we see luggage in the lake," volunteer Kevin Shomo told KNTV. "Sometimes it's full of clothes and it gets heavy from the water. We got near the body. We saw it and I said, 'Wow, how are we going to get this out of here? It looks like it's heavy.' We pulled it towards us closer using these net poles and we grabbed one end and then realized it was too heavy…We unzipped it and that’s what we found."

The identity of the victim and a cause of death have not yet been released, according to KTVU. The Oakland Police Department Homicide Division is investigating.

"Part of the investigation is trying to determine where the body was could have floated from. It could be any part of the lake, and we're looking at all those possible outcomes," Oakland police Capt. Alan Yu told KTVU.

No arrests have been made.
