A newborn whose body was discovered in a Portland recycling plant in 2013 has been identified, and her birth father was charged with her death following a decade-long investigation.

Alnath Omar Oliver, now 53, was indicted for manslaughter, rape, and concealing the birth of an infant, among other charges, the Portland Police Bureau announced.

Soon after police recovered her body, the city's medical examiner determined that the newborn, who became known as "Baby Precious" in the media, had died by homicide. But the baby's identity remained a mystery for years.

Police have now announced that the newborn was named Amara.

She was reportedly born alive and still had her umbilical cord attached when her body was discovered.

Law enforcement accused Oliver of denying Amara medical care intentionally and disposing of her body once she had died, OregonLive reported.

Oliver allegedly prevented Amara's mother, who was only 15 years old, from seeking medical care and forced her to give birth at his apartment. He was charged with rape because he was in his 40s when he had intercourse with her.

He reportedly promised to take the baby to a nearby foster care center. Amara's mother only learned years later that her daughter had not survived. Around 50 strangers attended the then-unidentified baby's funeral after her body was discovered in 2013.

In December 2021, police got their first break when an anonymous person left a submission on a DNA database that helped them identify Amara's mother. A year and a half later, Portland police had finally gathered enough evidence to arrest Oliver.

U.S. Marshals apprehended Oliver on September 21. He was booked at the Multnomah County Detention Center in Portland.
