WATCH: Bean the Chihuahua Makes Death-Defying Escape on New York Highway Before Commuters Come to His Rescue
The tiny but mighty dog was later reunited with his family
A chihuahua named Bean ran across a New York City highway last week in a dramatic escape caught on camera, which as since gone viral.
The tiny but mighty dog was seen running in between cars on the Staten Island Expressway before several motorists got out and tried to catch him.
“When I saw that dog, my instincts just kicked in and the only thing on my mind was to make sure that dog got to safety,” Katie Marie told SILive.com.
Several drivers tried to lead the dog to the Clove Road exit, but they were unsuccessful.
“We just kept trying to keep the dog in the HOV lane, trying to tire him out,” Marie said.
Eventually, some drivers were able to catch up with Bean and get him inside a vehicle.

Marie said the outcome would have been different if it weren't for all the people who stopped to help.
“When I looked up, I saw over 20 cars that were all helping, which was extremely wholesome to see how many Staten Islanders came together as a community on a busy highway, to help one dog with an aimless destination,” she said.
Kaitlyn McGinley was the one who picked Bean up.
“Once I got him in the car, he calmed down, he was shaking like a leaf,” McGinley said. “He finally sat down and relaxed, and I don’t know, it was just wild. Did not expect that to happen coming home.”
She was able to find his family through a Staten Island neighbors' Facebook page. The dog ran away after getting scared by a barking pit bull.
“He is home and safe, and that’s all that matters,” Tee Richardson told the New York Post.
