A rare tornado that barreled through the Arizona mountains on Sunday was caught on video as its estimated 100 mile-per-hour winds damaged at least 20 homes.

Crews from the National Weather Service's office in Flagstaff confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in Star Valley around 9:39 a.m. and lasted for about 10 minutes as it traveled approximately 1.5 miles.

The tornado's estimated peak winds topped out between 95 and 105 miles per hour, according to the weather service.

No people were inured, however one dog was killed during the high winds, ABC 15 Arizona reported.

Videos taken by stunned residents captured the wind funnel in motion, uprooting trees, ripping leaves off of branches and wreaking havoc on holiday decorations.

"I've never seen a tornado in the mountains before," a dad who caught the view on his phone can be heard saying in one of the clips, according to Fox Weather.

"I was so scared," another woman said. "What is happening?"

Fox reported locals were caught by surprise, likely as a result of the myth tornadoes can't form on mountains.

"While conditions would not be optimal for tornado development on top of mountains ... tornadoes have been documented to cross the Appalachian Mountains and cross a 10 thousand foot tall mountain in Yellowstone National Park," the weather service wrote regarding "common tornado myths"

Sunday's twister tore through town at 5,150-feet elevation. Star Valley is approximately 94 miles northeast of Phoenix.
