Anheuser-Busch announced that it would stop cutting the tails of the company’s Clydesdale horses after backlash from animal rights groups, reports said.

The popular beer brand has used the famous horses in commercials and to promote Budweiser. The company announced Wednesday that it would no longer “dock” the horses’ tails, which involves cutting through the animal’s tailbone, CNBC reported.

“The practice of equine tail docking was discontinued earlier this year,” a spokesperson for the company told the outlet. “The safety and well-being of our beloved Clydesdales is our top priority.”

The practice for cosmetic reasons is illegal in 10 states, according to CNBC, and is condemned by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which has condemned the practice and called it “crude mutilation,” said it was celebrating the announcement by “cracking open some cold ones.”
