A man who served as a military interpreter in Afghanistan and had been living near Washington, D.C., was killed this week while finishing a late-night shift as a Lyft driver.

According to a report from CBS News’ Washington, D.C., affiliate, Nasrat Ahmad Yar, 31, was fatally shot in his car just after midnight.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Ahmad Yar was the main provider for his family, including his wife and four children aged between 13 years old and 15 months. He would drive up to 12 hours per day for Lyft to afford rent and bills, according to WUSA.

Ahmad Yar and his family moved to Philadelphia, then Alexandria, Virginia, after fleeing Afghanistan when the country was taken over by the Taliban.

He had lived in Alexandria for less than a year when he was killed.

WUSA also reported that security camera footage from the night of the shooting showed four boys running away from the block where Nasrat’s car was located.

One of the boys shouted, “You killed him! He was about to get out,” while another mistakenly suggested he was reaching for a weapon.

A $25,000 reward is being offered for those who can provide information about the shooting. Tipsters can call the D.C. police department at (202) 727-9099 or send a text message to 50411.

A GoFundMe fundraising campaign has been set up to support Ahmad Yar’s family.
