12-Year-Old Charged With Murder After Woman Dies in Stabbing
It is unknown if the 12-year-old and the victim knew each other
A 12-year-old girl in Australia has been charged with murder after she allegedly stabbed a woman to death in a Melbourne apartment complex.
On Thursday, Victoria Police said that a "37-year-old woman was located deceased shortly before 2 a.m.," per ABC News.
Police arrested the 12-year-old at the scene before taking her to the hospital for assessment. Authorities confirmed the preteen had been charged with one count of murder and she has been placed in juvenile detention.
The motive for the stabbing is not currently known and it is unknown if the 12-year-old and the 37-year-old knew each other.
On Friday, the 12-year-old faced a child's court where her lawyer argued that it was 'inappropriate' for her to be placed in juvenile detention due to her disabilities, which he claimed included autism, ADHD, and anxiety.
To determine the requirements for her care and accommodations, the suspect will be assessed while she remains in custody, according to 9 News.
Her lawyer also stated his intention to apply for his client's bail at the Supreme Court to provide her with secure welfare, whether that be community housing arrangements or a boarding option.
